Knocking a load bearing wall

My wife and I are in the process of buying a house and are due to close soon. One of the jobs we would like to do is knock a load bearing wall between the kitchen and dining room which will involve putting in a steel and moving 2 rads (one each side of the wall). Just looking for some general advise on the following:
    • Best way to go about sourcing a builder
    • What do I need to ask the builder in terms of insurance etc?
    • I've heard of some scheme where you can claim the VAT off the price from certain registered builders? Would this type of work qualify?
    • How do I ensure the work is structurally sound and safe?

Apologies for all the queries. Have never had builders in to do any structural work before

    1. word of mouth or from 4.
    2. Have 4. Confirm everything is in order.
    3. Any tax compliant builder. Just agree the terms before commencement
    4. PI chattered structural engineer

Thanks Bryan. Is ‘PI’ ‘Professionally Indemnified’?
