Who owns all the chickens?

I'm not a farmer (obviously), I was just wondering about something.

As far as I know, most chicken in Ireland is processed by companies like Manor Farm. But how does this work?

Do farmers buy in chickens themselves, raise them and then go looking for a buyer? Do they have contracts with the companies that they're going to buy what they(the farmer) produce for X no. of years for such-and-such a price?

Or is it totally different? Maybe the companies own the chickens all the way through and they're just sub-contracting farmers to house and feed them for a few weeks?

    Anyway, thanks.
    Just curious.

Pretty much I believe that's it in a nut shell.one company(farmer) hatches the chicks, then the next company(farmer) just keeps them alive from day old chicks, to slaughter. And get paid a set rate once the birds met there weights etc on time.

Smaller producers May differ but the big opersters work this way, to the best of my knowledge

This Teagasc article gives a fairly good overview of poultry rearing in Ireland etc

    Thanks for the answers.

I'm familiar enough with the broad strokes and what the inside of a chicken house looks like, I was just curious about this one part of the business:
so...does ownership of chickens change anywhere along the line? (between hatching and packing) When they arrive at the farms as day-olds are the farmers actually "buying" them?
