At what point do you need to notify your insurance company of work starting?

We contacted ours a week after works started. Were told that we should have told them before works started. They emailed us a list of questions, we filled it in and emailed it back straight away. Ours was straightforward enough - all work on ground floor and no use of naked flames (I presume welding or torch on roofing). They also wanted the builders details and his insurance policy numbers.
Other questions included if we were moving out (we had), would we be checking the site regularly (we did, daily) and if there was a working, monitored alarm on the house (there was).

The obvious answer is at the earliest opportunity, that being said it often slips through the cracks and I would imagine sometimes the insures never get informed.
