Dog food for neutered dog

    Hi All,

My dog (GSD x Collie) was neutered over two weeks ago. Currently he is still his happy playful self so no issues there. He is coming up on a year and so it is time to move off puppy food. I currently have him on Gain big dog puppy. He eats it no problem, vet is very happy with his weight, comments on how nice his coat is etc, so I am happy with the food. He gets meat or fish in small portions a few times a week in his dinner.

He is actually eating better since being fixed (his food bowl is empty when I get home from work and he eats his dinner when I put it down in the evenings - which wasn't always the case before), yet I have not decreased the amount of food I am giving him since the op.

I went today and got a 3kg bad of the Gain big dog adult food (details below) but when I got back to work I read up on here, and I have seen people saying that a neutered dog should only be on 20-24% protein, and that the Gain all dog senior is a better choice (also below), but the thread is from 2011.

Has anyone any recent experience with this?

He is walked for 20mins in the morning, and minimum of an hour in the evening. He swims a few times a week and at the weekend is out on the farm with my partner (not a full working dog but he does try), so I doubt he will gain weight, but I want what is best for him.

I wouldn't get too hung up on protein levels at all (unless there's a medical need of course)..I wouldn't feed it myself (I feed raw) but if you're happy with the food and he's doing well on it then keep him on it! Just keep an eye on his weight - you should be able to feel his ribs so if he starts to get chunky cut the food back and too skinny increase it.

I had a retreiver / collie and we used Acana dog food its pricey but brilliant and on months where we ran out we used Select Gold Dog Food which is own brand maxi zoo but Gain is also good. If you are happy with the food then stick with it.

    I feed raw

Look at the ingredients about 23% and 17% meat

    The rest is just fillers.

IMO considering dogs are carnivores. I don’t see the logic in feeding this type of dried food.
