For the Summer, charge €1 for new accounts to signup

    Donate takings to Bumbulance

( text xyz to 5080*** kind of thing to keep it simple )

A very good cause, and I know Boardsies have supported them in the past through the Santa Strike Force which is organised through and with the support of this site.

Not sure if it's the best time to start charging for registration though (even such a very nominal sum) when numbers registering wouldn't be anything like as high as they were in the peak years.

Also I have a feeling that those "Text xyz to ..." things levy a charge or take a cut or something, so they might be the ones gaining the most in the end. :(

a good suggestion but perhaps more manageable if we just include a link to allow any user to donate and not just new registrations

A great cause, but that ploughing championship "theft" debacle really puts me off that particular charity, sorry.

New users probably wouldn't be too chuffed. Would solve any re-reg issues though :D

It might be called the Santa strike force but you can donate all year round. https://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=2057814294

Devore gets away with doing nothing for 10 months of the year which is a travesty. We should work him hard.:D

How many new genuine users sign up per month? I know the figures will be a bit off due to the fcuktard rereg fcukers.

A once off €1 to open an account which goes directly to SSF wouldnt be a bad idea.

Maybe a new user could get 3 free posts or something and then the option of the €1 fee to continue posting could kick in.

It would give new unique users a taste of the site, especially those just looking to ask 1 question then never use the site again.

It would also restrict disruption by the fcuktards. A 3 post limit for new accounts would reduce the amount of time Mods/Admins etc have to deal with the issue as it would be resolved after 3 posts.

They will get tired paying €1 for each account.

Now, the guys who change their account everytime they change their jocks wont be happy.

Might be an idea to fix subscribing first!

Subscriptions were fixed last year. There was one potential blip recently - though the subscription is showing as added and the user never came back to say if the issue was resolved (perhaps just wanting access to subscriber benefits quicker than the system acts).

It's a good idea but there are issues; legal, technical as well as moral.
If you allow one charity you kinda have to allow any charity, or it's favouritism.
Particularly if it required to be able to sign up to an otherwise free site.
SSF is run by boards itself so it makes sense to have that one allowed.

Although the cause may be grand, I would not recommend charging all new registering members such a (donation) fee. We have no idea how this may affect new member registrations, and consequently, should not proceed with such an idea without doing substantial research first. While I highly value the opinions given here in feedback (as one source of qualitative data), with the tens-of-thousands of sites on the web today, I would guess that some may have also done before-during-and-after crunching of numbers to measure things like a donation attached to registration outcome, perhaps in Internet marketing studies?

If we are dead serious about investigating such a new member (donation) fee, perhaps there are research qualified members who would volunteer to conduct such a study, beginning with a review of the scholarly literature (e.g., the answer may already exist). If not, then this may make for a grand student degree-related research project, where the thousands of boards existing members could be the research population. Alternatively, perhaps there are ways to include visiting non-members in yet another population to inquire how they may be affected by such a (donation) fee? In the latter case, such visiting non-member contacts may result in new member registrations, if properly done, as a beneficial side-effect for the site? Who knows?
