How to Invest in Index Funds in Ireland

    Hi,

I have recently started working, and have invested some money in particular stocks using DeGiro.

The stocks which I picked were based on a small amount of research I did myself, as well as just picking popular names, etc.

I invested around €1k in total between 20-30 stocks.

I thought that due to this diversification, the portfolio would grow consistently. Sure, some stocks would go down, but the others would drag them up to steady the ship.

But, what I found was that my portfolio value was consistently going down. So what I did was cut my losses with some stocks, and only keep the ones that were either breaking even, or increasing in value.

I cashed out around €660 of the value.

Today was the first time I checked my portfolio in months. Now, I hold 10 stocks, and the value is €385. So I've made around €45, which is good considering I was a couple hundred down a few months ago.

    My questions are:
    • Are there index funds that can be bought on DeGiro?
    • Which index funds would you advise investing in?
    • Are there specific index funds in different countries?
    • Ideally, I would like to invest in funds that have a couple hundred stocks that they indiscriminately pick?

    1k over 20-30 shares.

    Interesting approach.

But just because something went down didn't mean you should sell. Are you looking at at valuations or just price?

Anyway to answer the question yes you can buy index funds on degiro?

    Search for threads on ETF.

I think you should read some investing books first though.

How can ya possibly keep up with the info on 20-30 stocks?
And 1000/30 is only 33 euro a stock, you'd be losing a decent percentage of the money you invest to fees.

You can only buy EU domiciled ETFs on Degiro at the moment.

While not index funds, you could look into UK investment trusts (the ones with low/low-ish fees). They can be bought on DeGiro, some track indices and most importantly they're treated similarly to shares (and not EU listed ETFs) for Irish tax purposes.
