Asbestos query

    Hi

I have a house that was built somewhere around the 70s. It has occurred to me that I should check it for asbestos.

I know asbestos normally only causes problems when work is being done etc. Unfortunately the only time any significant was done is 10 years ago when I bought it! We replaced a few ceilings, put up one stud wall, took down another and repainted the whole house inside and out.

What is the next step? Do I have to get it tested? Am I looking at a huge bill?

As a hazardous material, it’s in your own interest to get the house checked and to make sure it’s safe etc for you and your children. As you already know, it’s only dangerous when it’s worked on and altered in a way that allows the fibers release into the air.

There’s a health and safety regulation that states any building built before 2000 must go through an asbestos survey prior to any major alteration or refurbishment so worth bearing in mind if you plan on any building works.

I'll have to enquire locally to find someone to do an asbestos survey.
