Freelance Social Media Management?!

Bit of background first - went back to college and qualified with Bachelor of science degree in Digital Media. While in college was working part time in local hotel which lead to full time after college and transitioned into deputy manager role.

While looking for more suitable work, my partner and I had a baby so decided to find work close to home. I am now working in an IT customer support role which is grand, basic salary at the moment.

I am thinking of doing some thing to put my qualification to use to make a bit extra cash along the lines of Social/Digital media management for local small businesses. But am at a loss as to where to start really.

I have a personal portfolio which of course would be expanded over time but has anyone had any experience on something like this - particularly how to start off and how to gain potential clients and is it worth it - what to charge people?

Was thinking of contacting 1 or 2 smaller businesses and offer them social media management for free to build up real experience/portfolio.

Hey Irish stevo, I might be able to help you with this. I work for a company which needs someone to look after their social media a bit. Send me a PM and we can have a chat. Cheers.
