Which boot - Hanwag vs Lowa

No experience with the Hanwags but have heard only good things.

I've had the Lowa Mountains and they're a very sturdy boot. They're far from lightweight but they lace well, loads of ankle support, and the shape and fit of them is very good. Lot of room for sore feet to swell and not cramp up. They're quite a stiff sort of leather though and even after a lot of wear they still feel quite hard.

I've had a pair of Lowa Z8N which were brilliant. Wore those for a lot of tactics, lot of long walks and such. Very high opinion of them. They're lightweight but still offer plenty of ankle support. I never felt they were any less supportive than the Mountains so you didn't really gain anything for the extra weight. I also preferred the closed eyelets on the Z8 when I got used to them.

Worth noting is that both Lowa boots have a less grippy sole than on Meindls for example. It's still pretty good but just doesn't seem to offer quite the same traction as some boots particularly on the likes of wet rocks.

Currently getting some time on a pair of Salomon Forces and really liking them so far. Very strong and supportive, but lightweight as anything. Running in them is a pleasure and when you've a bit of gear on you it does make a big difference.

Salomons or Salewa would be a good shout. Used both extensively and would highly recommend.

Great Outdoors carry Salomon anyway. I doubt you'll find either of the boots in your OP here anyway.

Cotwold Outdoor said they could special order the Hanwags, I wasnt aware great outdoors carried Salomon. I am finding it hard to find a shop with the Lowas in stock : (

Anywhere that stocks Lowa would be able to order them in but generally places expect you to buy if they order them in. Salomon you'll get in the Cotswold place as well. The two boots you're looking at are a much more solid type of boot though so start with defining exactly what you're looking for.

A robust low ankle boot that will take plenty of km walking in Mountains.

To be honest you'd be well served by any good hiking boot, doesn't need to be a military type unless your job specifies it. The Lowa Mountains are good but they're a lot harder on the feet I think than some of the more lightweight ones. I've only been doing loaded runs with the Salomons but they're very supportive, no doubts about them for the mountains. I did use the Lowa Z8 a good bit in the mountains so can vouch for them. I'm just not convinced anymore about the need for heavier thicker boots for walking, even with quite a bit of weight. Few friends of mine have used the Z6 if you're looking for a lower ankle version and they loved them but I've not had them myself. Looking back however, I'd probably take a pair of them over the Z8 if I could do it again.

Lads just looking for advice on boots if anyone has any experience with either. Im looking at the Hanwag sf gtx or the Lowa Mtn gtx

If it is for military use, I would hold off. Rumours are that the Army is switching to British Army style Brown boots. You don't want to spend a lot on new boots only to not be able to wear them. Then again, this might only be for overseas - wait for more concrete info.
