Right. So here's what I have.

Virgin Media broadband. Their standard VM Hub.
I have a WDCloud hooked up to the VM hub via cable.
I have my PC hooked up to the VM hub via WIFI.

I can reach speeds of up to 10MB/s downloading from the internet on my PC.
When I copy from my WDCloud to my PC over my LAN I get speeds of approx 3MB/s.

Can anyone help me work out why this is please? I don't understand why LAN speeds would be slower than internet speeds in this case.

    Thanks for your help

According to the VM hubs list of connected devices it's 1000Mbits.

The specs say 1000Mbits too and there's an indicator light on the back of it which gives the 1000Mb colour.

Would be handy to have specs.
    How old is WDCloud ?

That is like USB2 speed. Sorry, but have to ask: you don't have WDCloud USB connected to your PC and then Ethernet to hub? If you are – loose USB(you can ignore following steps then).

What you transferring – single file or lot of small files?
What transfer speed you get: your PC >> WDCloud ? (use one big file ~ 1-3GB)
What transfer speed you get: WDCloud >> another PC >> WDCloud ? (use one big file ~ 1-3GB)
Can you run benchmark on WDCloud drive – could be drive on the way out? AS SSD Benchmark or ATTO Disk Benchmark just as samples.

You've an older (what, 6yrs now?) generation unit no doubt. 3-4MB/s is normal, the little RISK board on them is realllllly slow.

New ones are about 20x faster.

Thanks for the advice lads. Was away from the PC to test the last few days but just back and borrowed a friends Wifi USB - I'm getting 15MB/s copying from and 10MB/s copying to.

I really don't understand why I would have got fast internet downloads and slow LAN downloads on the other adapter, but there you have it. Have borrowed the mates adapter for a while to see how it goes.
