B6 Passat oil pressure warning

Was driving along in the sunshine on Saturday when my red oil light came on and I was told to stop the car immediately so I did. I got out checked the oil level and for any leaks seemed fine. Got back in started it and drove it the 3 or 400 metres home and left it over night.

Started her again Sunday and drove it around for awhile that day did a few bits before the light came on again so I coasted home and have left her there since.

From reading online it looks like it could be bolloxed altogether? Car starts and was driving fine no strange noises or anything. I'm getting it towed out to my mechanic tomorrow but has anyone had this issue and came out the other side with their wallet and car intact?

EDIT: Forgot to mention there is some oil on the engine block around the filler cap and down the left hand side of it.

Hopefully you have got it in time, possible starvation of oil though as tubes clog, sludge issue either.

    Has car been serviced correctly?

Thanks for reply, Had a lot of work done last October for the NCT and had it's last full service done then as well. Was probably due one around now tbh.

Sounds like the oil pump balance shaft has failed. You 'may' have gotten away with it. But the head would have been starved of oil.

Do you know the engine code. ? Usually the issue affected the earlier 2.0 TDi (PD) engines.

It's a petrol 1.6 FSI slow as a boat and hungry as a bear

Would that be a big job if it did happen to be that?

How does the engine sound when running? It may not have any serious damage done yet. It could be simply down to sludge buildup in the sump causing the oil pump pickup pipe to become partially blocked. The best thing to do would be to get an oil pressure test done, then remove the sump, clean it out, clean/replace the pickup pipe and refit the sump. Change the filter, refill with oil and do another pressure test. Chances are it will be ok.

Thanks George hopefully you are right as really not in the position to be buying a car at the moment. Engine sounded fine when it was running no issues at all just the red oil light and incessant beeping, I'm half afraid to start it now so I'll just wait till my mechanic gets at it he said he will run an oil pressure test so fingers crossed.

Best thing do not restart or run at all.

Mechanic said the oil pressure switch was leaking so he changed that and ran it for a while with no problems or warnings. He had no fitting to check my oil pressure so hopefully it was just the bad pressure switch.

Does normally be the oil pressure switch alright. Ur not to bad so. Have seen afew done so that’s where I would of started myself also.
But George is right the pick up does get particularly blocked in the sump aswell another common vag issue. But at least u got lucky and had a cheap fix. Hopefully that’s u trouble free now.

Unfortunately not. Had the car out the garage half an hour and the light is back on. Never easy.. Not sure what to do now

EDIT: Right so car is starting fine and driving fine no rattles no funny noises it's running smooth. The light came on twice on my way home from town. The second time it came on at 1500rpm but I thought 2k was the threshold?

Also it isn't staying on it will come on flashing and beep 2 or 3 times and with the warning telling me to stop and then the oil light and the warning will go off again?

This threw me when I read it yesterday but I didn't say anything, trying to avoid unnecessary negativity but look where we are now.

Mechanic not having the right tools and using "hope" when the fate of your hard earned rests on it.

Jaysis fooking Christ. I feel for you. Not much you can do now but I wouldn't be going back to that mechanic he sounds a bit crap.

Yeah I’d be abit worried about the mechanic that did the work to. You defo need get the oil pressure checked as a starting point.
My guess now tho and it more then like is the oil pick up in the sump. Failing that ur into oil pump territory

As I said in my previous post you have to get an oil pressure test done. It’s the only way to know what is going on.

Just a quick question on this, Car has been sitting up as I don't have the money at the moment with holidays coming up and I'm working close to home so don't need it. But if I were to get a mechanic to check the pressure and it came back that it was fine would it be OK to drive the car even with the light coming on?

I can afford to get the test done but any other work would have to wait so just seeing would there be any point getting it done now.

Sorry for dragging up old thread here. I've had the car in a mechanics last few days who has cleaned the oil pick up and ran an oil pressure test on the car (200e!)

Oil pick up was fine he said so that's not the problem. He ran the oil pressure test and said it has low pressure not too bad but it is low. I'm going out to him tomorrow. This car has been driven about 1000km since the warning first came up. No knocks or funny noises still. Doesn't come on at idle only when car heats up after driving for a bit.

He's polish so was hard enough to understand but he was talking about replacing the oil pump. If that's what it takes to fix the car then fine but surely driving the car for 1000km the damage is going to be more than the oil pump?

I just want to know what to ask him tomorrow when I go out. I've done so much reading on this my head is fried.
