Currently in the market for a second tractor around the 115hp mark (if not more) 6 cylinders ideally. Work would include agitating mainly, topping, a bit of fertilizer and stuff like that. Budget would be 15k+ but would spend 25/30 if very good value. Thinking nh(blue roof) 7840 or something similar. What are people’s opinions on the most suitable and any particular tractors available around the country?

    Thanks in advance.

For the jobs listed above 115hp is far too big and would be mostly a waste of Diesel

OP what amount of slurry do you have to do. Is you land very fragmented. For 15k you will buy little in a 6 cylinder. Most tractors in that bracket 6 cylinder 15k will have huge amounts of work done. Very hard to buy any decent tractor at present sub 20-25k. You could end up with huge maintenance bills. All the rest of your work could be done with a 70-80 hp tractor and of you had dry land a 2wd would do the other type of work.

I get all my slurry done by a contractor along with bale drawing and stacking as to keep a 4wd tractor doing that work costs money.

Have a 7840 here. Agitates and pumps slurry fine, will be able for most mowers and toppers, would want weights on the front for anything heavy such as a double bale handler despite the 6 cylinders. Did a job on the gearbox 3 years ago. Prefer driving it to the neighbours tm. Getting one in good nick may be tough tho, they are old enough now

I have a 6 cylinder jd 6600 and I have to agree it's too big for those type of jobs. It's heavy on the diesel but overall I am happy with it, no real issues. I was on the lookout for a 4 cylinder tractor but found I could buy a clean 6 cylinder for the same price. I know I'm wasting more money on diesel but I like knowing I have the power if I ever need it.

The NH 7840 are a fine tractor and if you're patient you'll get a clean one for 15k. As you stay stick with the blue cab. I was going to buy one but came across the jd first. Have a 399 as well for loader work, prefer the power quad and Commander gears - better lock on NH and JD tractors of that era as well. I don't see the point of spending more than 15k for that type of work. I saved a few bob by sticking to my budget and bought an RTV out of the remaining funds.

Thanks a million for all the replies

I understand totally everyone’s points and appreciate all yere points of view.

Just to add. We have a couple of reasons for choosing this size of a tractor. We have a 14 case maxxum 125 with f&c susp 600 Tyres etc. and at the moment that is doing all work (200 acres approx) between topping fertilizer slurry agitating drawing bales in summer and winter (no loader work though). Where we’re getting caught is the slurry. Agitator on tank on thick slurry agitator on tank on etc. And the changing takes time. Also over half our ground is 18km from home so need a six cylinder for smooth road work. A lot of our ground is also fairly wet and hilly so the power would be needed were it to be used as a back up to the case. Came from a tl90a which resembled a grass hopper on the road or in a rough field so something that size is doubtful though not out of the question.

I see a very tasty 7840 with slemish tractors for 13.5k sterling along with a couple more early low hour tms around the 20 sterling at other dealers.

Then the other option is keep the 💴 in the bank ðŸ˜ðŸ˜

    Keep the suggestions rolling in.

Also wouldn’t rule out any other breed (even though we have a soft spot for the CNH😂)

    + vat or including?

Edited to ask are the arion 420 not 100hp? Arion 440 would be 115hp but are only 4 cylinder. You know a lot more about claas than me though.

Plus vat. This is the older style tractor. So I think they are around 115-120 mark

JD engine. The larger tractors have the iveco engine but the smaller ones still have the jd engine

What year and number is yours if you don't mind me asking David. I am thinking of buying a fresh low houred second hand 120ish hp tractor/loader in the next year or two. Massey, Deere, NH, Fendt and Valtra all seem out of my price bracket. Claas and kubota seem the obvious choices to me then.
Any issues with the head gasket on your jd engine?

Mine is 2014 and it’s an arion 530 4 cylinder 145hp. It has 3,100 hours on it, with no mechanical issues. Had a few issues with electrics alright. With claas the less electrics on it the better. It’s comfortable, easy to operate and maintain with good vision. I wouldn’t buy one new personally because of their devaluation
