Soundstore Tvs

None of those tv's are on that much of an offer. They are at a good price, but nothing special.

I would buy the Samsung. It has a lot of features and is a good mid tier tv + you can install Smart IPTV from the Samsung app store. This one feature ads so much more to a tv than just about anything these days... also, Sammy tv's are on average the best or for gaming.

... but as I said, the prices are or have been around there before for these tv's.

Thanks for all that advice, folks.

Samsung looks like a good one to go for, at the price from Richersounds.

Possibly simple question, but would that TV get Saorview and also some of the British terrestrial channels?

Yes, dependent on your aerial/dish set up, most new TVs let you plug your dish connection straight into the tv now, dunno if this tv has it cuz the spec list is crap.
Heres Samsungs own spec page for it and it's not even clear...
    Digital Broadcasting
    DVB-T2C
    Analog Tuner
    Yes

So I'm assuming it has DVB-C (plug your dish in) and T2 for your RTE etc.

I've an LG with it that must be 3 years old so don't buy a TV that doesn't have it.

If you have good broadband then Reread jonerkinsella post above and do a bit of googling.

    DVB-C = digital cable tuner
    DVB-S/S2 = digital satellite tuner

No mention of DVB-S/S2 or a second RF input for the satellite dish in the specs so the assumption would be no satellite tuner on board.

Saorview yes, the UK terrestrial channels only via the terrestrial tuner (DVB-T/T2) with an aerial and if within range of a UK terrestrial transmitter in NI or Wales.

What's the c tuner used for?

POS TVs if you can't even plug the satellite into them.

Digital cable network standard e.g. Virgin Media etc. if they were ever to carry any of their channels unencrypted. Used by some cable networks around continental Europe who offer a package of basic channels unencrypted for a subscription fee, customer use their own DVB-C compatible receivers to access the channels.

If this is a mid Tier Samsung, what would be a model in the next Tier up?

I was actually looking at this one (50" MU6120 Ultra HD ) to purchase but you guys have given me a lot to think about, my current Samsung (1080 HD Ready DNIE) is just dated and needs replacing even though its perfect.

I don't mind spending more €€€ so long (say up to 1k) as I get all the bits and pieces you are discussing here.

    Thanks in advance.

just make sure that whatever TV you buy, its a smart tv - a decent internet connection and you won't ever need subscription tv like sky / virgin. (though Netflix would be good)

You're looking for something like this with Freesat on board:

The Sammys go in tiers of series corresponding to the first number. bottom to top tier 4***, 5***, 6***, 7***, 8***.
Afaik though, the 50" panel in the 6series is an AO panel and not a Sammy panel. The AO panel is still good quality though.

I would spend the grand and get a QF model TV (the newer QF model numbering system is a bit confusing, but these are considered the older 7 and 8 tier models now ). You will get satellite and terrestrial tuner's, and tons more features that will take a bit of time to research. I have seen TV's in this range for the 1k mark, here for example ( other stores have this tv at the same price, I just picked this store as it's handy)
