Chromebook reduced WiFi range reception

Recently my HP 14" chromebook stopped picking up home WiFi signal beyond a certain range. Could always get the signal in the garden and at end of house.
Thought at first it was a modem problem.(Have eir FBTH) Relocated the modem, no improvement. Then realised the Chromebook the wife has works fine around the house and in the garden with almost full bars showing.

Anyone got any idea what's gone wrong with my HP unit..... oh... also, the HP takes a few seconds to lockon to the wifi at any location....

Without doing any homework on it, antenna cable. Most laptops run it up through the hinge. With use it can snap, nuking wifi performance.

There's something like rabbit ears one running up each side of your screen to pick up wifi. There's a cable that has to run through the hinge, that can break.
