Most people are familiar with loughree being on the shannon and north of Athlone but what most wouldnt realise is the historical significance of the lake. Its littered with beautiful islands some of which are home to ruins of old churchs and even a monastery.inchbofin has 2 old church ruins one of which has a stone cutout of a bishops head on its gable.an amazing piece of history.Inchcleraun which is at the northern end of loughree is home to a monastery which was founded by st diarmuid and dates back well over a 1000 years.it really is incredible to find the like of it on an island on a lake,so hidden away.their are other islands such as nuns island, friars island, saints island and hare island all on loughree with significant historical value.this lake is a hidden gem and should be promoted more .
