    Can someone tell me is there any way to get a British birth or marriage cert without paying the hefty £9.50

    Mod note: separated this to its own thread as it wasn't relevant to the other topic.

    They have a pdf scheme for births/deaths within a certain period that cost £6.50. For marriages, there's no alternative.

    100% - the difference is they don't offer a non-legal copy. We have the historic certs but they can't be used to prove nationality or get a passport. There is provision for the UK GRO to start offering a cheaper or free version, that's why they have the pdf trial at the moment - to see how popular it is.
