Integration and Names

I had a little bit of a spat on the Atheist & Agnostic forum because I made a trivial comment about the prevalence of the name Mohammad in the Muslim community. I was chastised by the supreme posters on there for making such a comment as if it were inspired by Muslim hatred on my part.

But this spat got me thinking about multiculturalism and names. The random thoughts I had was would a Muslim family in the UK name their offspring Michael. Indeed would an English family name their offspring Hussain, and if not why not?

I posit there is no such thing as true multiculturalism. Rather what we have is cultures living within a host culture and there is no real integration at all, especially in the UK, and the devotion to names is a strong indicator of that.

I can't see how if names are so important to ppl as trivial as that is that we have a hope of overcoming the more serious cultural integration issues we face in our society today.

We shouldn't waste our time trying to overcome serious cultural integration issues. It cannot be done. As a species we are not wired to have open borders and unlocked doors.

Do we really need another thread about this?
