EBC - a year to prepare?

I've gotten it into my head that I want to do the EBC trek.

I'm reasonably happy outdoors and, although a bit sedentary thanks to office work, my baseline fitness is alright. Fairly pigheaded about just keeping going so think I'm mentally resilient enough for it.

I was thinking of doing the trek with a group like G Adventures next year.

Realistically, what do I need to do starting from zero? It doesn't look technically difficult, just steep and high.

I'd appreciate any guidance about hillwalking groups to join, gym routines to follow etc. I'm in Dublin.

ETA: What time of year is best for the trek?
