My friend is starting as a photographer. She shot a defendant attending a court case. He was convicted. She was paid. But when he appealed they used her photo again from the original case where he was convicted. Should she be paid again. She does not want to make waves as she needs to make contacts

What are the rules about this and what are the rates s of payment

I would think they bought the rights to use the photo once.

It's like asking how long a piece of string is. Depends entirely on what terms she signed when they licensed the image.

She did not sign anything. Just sent it in and they used it because they did not have anyone at the court that day and wanted the image.

    Well there you go :)

Do they have usage T&Cs on their site (whoever it is we're talking about here, I assume a newspaper) ? Did they pay her ? Is it not probably more useful for her to talk to them ?

The did pay her. Yes a paper. Don't know about usage T&C. She is only starting and does not want to make waves
