I bought an iPhone 6 Plus from a guy on Adverts, turned out to be locked - he said he's sort it but never did, have to do it myself now. Locked to a Canadian network called Roger. I tried one shop they said it will be €40 - can I do it myself online for cheaper?

No €40 is good for it.

Your first mistake was buying an iPhone.

The title says Rogers CA, the blurb says VF Spain. Sounds like BS.

iOS unlocks are often done via the network instead of a NAC code, in those cases only the network can unlock it.

Iirc they have never used a code, the network had to request it and then the unlock would be done through iTunes servers when the iPhone was restored in iTunes. I'm the last few years it has changed to OTA through iTunes servers.

Ok so I'm not familiar with Apple - how does this work exactly? I thought you put a sim in, it asks you for a code, you put it in and hey presto. No?

The dodgy guy I bought it from on adverts gave me this weird little tiny chip which I insert on top of the sim card and it somehow tricks the networks into making it work. However when you go overseas it wont work. The guy swore he'd have the unlock code for me in a few days and of course he never did. I stupidly believed him. Pity I cant vie him a bad review now its too late.

Varies by network but say here for example, three will only unlock an iPhone for the original owner owner whereas Vodafone will do it for any customer. The request can only be done by the network the iPhone was originally locked to.

Customer contacts network and they request apple to unlock it, apple then remove the network lock from that iPhone the next time it syncs with iTunes servers.

Everyone else: Baseband radio has a setting that needs a key to network unlock, big string you type in. Phone doesnt care how you got it once its valid.

Apple: Controlled centrally by Apple. If IMEI X was sold to Rogers then Rogers need to tell them to unlock X.

The fact that it was using a SIM sleeve was a dead giveaway. Hope at least you got it cheap.

Do you physically have to connect t the pc? I doubt by wife has ever done this or used iTunes.

Yeah I should have known something was wrong but he promised the unlock within a week. It worked with the sleeve so was not an urgent problem but then he was all excuses. Got it a good bit cheaper than buying new but probably not worth it in the end as it usualy isnt...

I tried the ebay unlock but he was unable to do it.

Does anyone know what a "Turbo Sim" is? So when I got the phone it came with a tiny chip that I needed to put on top of the sim when inserting it, and it made it work in Ireland.

The guy said maybe a new Turbo sim will make it work overseas also.

Maybe I just need to pay the €40 to get it properly unlocked.
