Side windows in a van?

Is it legal to put side windows in to a van taxed as a commercial vehicle?

Also, what is the status of crew cab vans - are they still classified as commercial?

Crew Cab vans are still classified as commercial vehicles, but they are a Category B Commercial rather than a category C, so there is 13.3% VRT due upon registration rather than €200 for a Cat C. Can still be taxed as commercial vehicles, but may involve additional forms to the tax office than regular vans.

I'm not sure what the deal with putting windows in the side of a van after it's registered is. I don't think it's legal, but wouldn't know where to start looking to get a reference for that. I think it does alter the VRT amount due from €200 to 13.3%, and no longer qualifies for 5% BIK if a company vehicle.

Any particular reason to put just windows on the side of the van?

I'd like to soften the van look and maybe occasionally sleep in the back.

I'm also considering importing a Partner / Berlingo van and doing a car conversion, the reason being the car version is about twice the price of the van version; however, I'm concerned about getting insurance for a modified vehicle.
