Got my car air conditioning re-gassed in Halfords today for 40.50 euro with an AXA Plus card, 45 euro without. Cheapest around afaik .

    http://www.halfords.ie/advice/motoring/service/halfords-car-air-conditioning-services

Great service, just called in and takes less than 5 minutes.

Phoned around before and most places were looking for between 70 to 120 euro:eek:.

    Is it a DIY job?

How do they recharge or check it?

Aircon gas is measured in weight. The only way to check it is to remove it and refill the correct amount while also adding a lubricant.

You can't check the pressure because it could just be air in there.

Also if you have a newer car like the new model qashqai they don't use the standard r134a or whatever the gas is. It's a much more expensive gas and I wouldn't let anyone other than a specialist near it.

Hard to argue with that but it's not really comparing like for like with the other prices you got.

And how cheap will it be when that gas leaks out into the enviroment and your air con doesnt work again.
All they done was regassed it a proper ac service involves vacuam checks and checking for leaks after which you didnt get for fourty euro.

Shop around and you'll get a full pump down, pressure check, lubrication and regas for €50. €40 for a shop assistant to have a go at topping it up with an aerosol can is far from a bargain.

Is there somewhere in north dublin that'll do it for 50 quid?

Would people have any reservations about getting the Halfords regas? It would be very cheap and convenient for me.

Got my car regassed in Halfords Carrickmines a couple of months ago for 35 euro less 10% for AXA card. They check for leaks first.Working perfect as is wife's car done last year.

Anyone know would this Halfords deal work for a 2014 Kia Cee'd? Was at first stop in Sandyford yesterday but they said they couldn't do it cause they didn't have the right machine for it? Autoaircon.ie told me on the phone it would be €200 for them to do it.

Cheapest in Waterford is 70 euro for regas (500 gram) with vacuum check and lubricant. This was 50 euro two years ago. Price of R134 has definitely increased.

I was looking for a good test and regas in Cork but the only place I could find was MM motors Douglas. They were busy so I went to halfords in the end and they were fine, still working anyway.

Your much better paying the extra couple of quid and going to autoaircon in parkwest and getting the full service over the can of stuff In Halfords. If Halfords aren't using the correct machine to remove the old gas, reoil/regas ECT it's definitely not a bargain

The refill canister seems to cost €60 on their site. It seems kind of pointless buying that if you can get them to put it in as well for cheaper, or am I missing something?!

It seems you get £10 back for the empty can and also some of the reviews say they get multiple cars from the one canister. So the guys in halfords are probably using one can for 2 or more cars

I asked the guy that did the air con for me and he said most cars take close to a full can.

You can check under bonnet there is a label with amount of gas in air con. If you still have gas and add full can it maybe to much and pressure valve will not let compressor to work.
I would avoid halfords refill cans as you can damage you aircon especially they are not so much cheeper than normal recharge.

Just got my aircon recharged today for only 31 euro (I had an Axa card). The guy said my car took a full bottle, so was well drained.

Vents are now blowing cold air and I am well satisfied for the money.

And where do you think the gas went in the first place ??

Don't have a clue. He said there were no signs of leaks though.

I have other things to interest me besides air conditioning systems, fortunately.

I'm no mechanic but from my knowledge cars leak a small bit of gas to lubricate a seal on the air con compressor(?) I think .
So an older car could be drained?

Got mine done in Halfords last year. Needed to get it done again this year but they did it for free.

Any recommendations in Cork for a 151 Nissan Qashqui to get service/recharge? Nissan have changed the type of gas used and nearly all garages don't do services/recharges on the newer Nissan models. Main dealer quoted €399. Halford's guy thought he could do it, but they lost the adapter needed for the newer Nissan's.

€250 + VAT in a local garage in Cork that I've used before. The price is mainly in the newer gas.
