Where can I get mental health help?

Just want to stress I'm not looking for medical advice or anything like that.

So I've just finished my final year of college and its time that I do something about something that's been ongoing for a long time.

I've been experiencing mental health issues for a while, most strongly over about the last year and a while. I was too worried to try and get help while I was still in college because I didn't want it to affect being able to finish my degree.

I'm in a really bad place with it at this stage and I can't bear it anymore so I really want help but I don't know where to go to get help.

Do I go to a GP and just explain the situation to them or do GP's not handle stuff like this and I should go somewhere else?

    Thanks

Yup GP is your first port of call and they can refer you to an appropriate service. There can be a waiting list unfortunately though. Other option would be to google free/cheap counselling near you they are few and far between but do exist. Good luck

    +1

Please don't wait. Talk to GP asap. Are you able to afford private counselling services? Such services are widely available but cost in the region of 50-80 per hour. If you are, your GP will know ppl. GP might also consider you might get some help from a medication as well.

You've taken a great 1st step by acknowledging that you could do with a bit of help. Well done! And best of luck going forward.

There are also services like Living Life in Bray (sorry not sure where you are) that work on a basis of what you can afford, yes there may be a waiting list but if you are flexible with your time they will fit you in.

Well done and best of luck.

    Hi Op

if you need immediate help, present yourself at A&E.

It might sound strage but its the one way of obtaining immediate help in Ireland. If you have suicidal thoughts, or you are self harming, go straight to A&E.

Are you still a registered student, OP? You probably are until your student card runs out. You could contact your college counselling service, they will probably have reduced hours but also a reduced caseload over the summer months and it'll be free for you. Your college counselling service don't talk about your mental health issues with anyone, the only exception is if they truly believe your life or the life of another person is in danger. That holds true for all counselling services.

Pietahouse, Pieta.ie is a good place too.

They do free counselling if I recall. You can ring them at 1800 247 247
