This evening about 1830, following arrival of 1637 from Bangor, Michael Portillo was in Newry station.

Our esteemed friend, one time Rt Hon member for Southgate, later for Chelsea, HM Sec for Transport and saviour of the Settle & Carlisle railway, was clad in lilac jacket and bright green trousers, and clutched his trusty Bradshaw in his hand,

He was accompanied by a camera crew and stood statuesque, apparently indicating that he should not be approached, as he was about to be filmed.

Is there a new series of Great Railway Journeys in prospect, or was Portillo perhaps making a programme about Brexit?

The book in hand would suggest a railway travel show.

Although he was a Euro-sceptic, once he refused to sanction closure of the S&C, he became a hero in my estimation.
