Chkdsk /r still on stage 1 after overnight

I started a chkdsk /r on a laptop drive last night to try fix some errors on the drive using a Windows 8 dvd I downloaded from Microsoft as I couldn't boot windows normally. I used command prompt and chkdsk /r.
It's been running over 12 hours and is still on stage 1 at 44%.
A huge number of file record segments are unreadable.
What would be the best way of stopping it because it looks like it will never stop?
I wasn't expecting the drive to be that badly damaged. It shouldn't take that long on 500gb drive really.

CTRL-C may function as an escape in the Chkdsk booter (DOS).

That drive is knackered. Check SMART to confirm realloc/failed alloc sector counts out the wazoo.

    Ctrl + c doesn't work.
    Any other ideas?
I suppose the harddrive is so badly damaged that it really doesn't matter if I shut it down
It's at 56% of stage one with an ETA of 999 hours.

Going that slowly its asking the drive for the same sector 1000 times then maybe writing it once, odds are if you force it down you won't interrupt a write.

Chkdsk actually gave up with an error 3 hours after that.
    Drive is banjaxed.
    New drive ordered.
    Thanks folks.
