Hey, long story short - was in for flight at departure gate and pen hour beforehand it got cancelled.

Now I called customer service and got next flight for 5 AM (12 hours later than originally planned), now I live in Ireland but outside of Dublin and it would be impossible to get transport at 5 AM.

So basically stranded in airport right now, getting taxi would cost me a good 150-200 euro.

Can I go to nearby hotel and claim later from flight company?

It depends why the flight was cancelled. Check out the EU air passenger rights

Sorry for the lateness, but under EU261 the airline will have to cover all your expenses for what was "reasonable" for you. So any food/hotels etc if you have receipts they should cover it.

If you want compensation it depends why it was cancelled.

Yes I think you should be covered, if it wasn’t because of industrial action. It is reasonable that you should get sleep for several hours, it is not reasonable for you to have to travel fair distance home and back by Taxi-last minute taxis are not guaranteed as I found out when I became very ill and couldn’t get to my usual Hospital. There’s a few hotels, including the one within walking distance, and the Radisson which is on campus. They usually have spare rooms. You are entitled to a reasonable meal, eg a bar meal and non alcoholic refreshment or if late, room service. I remember in Amsterdam my flight came in too late to make a transit and KLM put me up in a 4 star hotel with 3 course dinner, wine, and breakfast.
