What is the general CSS in your club? I would expect it to be 35/36 in most clubs.

Our club has a CSS that is always 38. Always difficult to get a handicap cut. I think the calculation has to do with the number of Cat 1 players we have which would be <10 and there scores pushing it up.

Ours would be similar to yours. Cuts are hard to come by!

ours is generally 34-35 cuts are also very hard to come by last six (approx 550 rounds) competitions 8 people have broken par

Look at the SSS on the score card, I'm guessing anywhere with 37 and 38 regularly has a low SSS and opposed for high SSS.
My home course is an easy/shortish course, has a low SSS and so 38 is regularly CSS from the front sticks.

Ours has been 75-78 recently, course playing difficult off the back tees.

What does SSS stand for? Is it a slope rating?

In a comp during the week only the winner with 40 points was cut. He received a cut of 0.1 as a Cat 1 player and CSS was 39!

    Standard Scratch Score.

I’ve played opens before where away players had their own CSS. Is this the norm at all open singles comps?

My old course the CSS was always 38 points even if nobody scored anyway near it.

If an Open Comp has more than 20 home and 20 visitors then there must be an Away CSS calculation.

If it was the case that the Away CSS was higher, it would be reduced to the Home CSS.

It makes sense but it's not the norm in my experience as it would have to be a fairly busy Open.

Off the yellow tees its 38 points. The last two Yellow tees comps though have been 35 points, reduction only.

Off the white tees, its normally 35/36 points. The last three white tees comps though have been 34, 33 and 33 reduction only.

Course playing very tough at the moment

    Yellow tees 36-37 points.

White tees it is 34-36 points.

Blue tees 32-33 points. Only about 2-3 comps a year played from Blues

There too, lovely day is all I can say, greens improving thankfully.
The 13th is just silly, the course (Athlone) is in desperate need of a breather section

Ours over the last while CSS has been 72/ 73/ 74 and up to 75 at times (Par 71, so that's 32-35 Pts). Our SSS just seems too high. It seems everyone has been cut to sh1t and it's showing in our Teams performances: last year (granted, all 1st round matches were away), we lost them ALL, except Junior Cup got to Connacht Semi-final, also Barton Shield (but handicap doesn't come into that one). The trend is continuing this year: already lost in 1st round Inter Club 4Ball, Jimmy Bruen, Pierce Purcell, Mixed 4Somes, that 4 losses from 4. We're a fairly big Club (Rosses Point), you'd expect that we should be able to field competitive teams in all competitions given the number of players.

In Mitchelstown it's generally between 34 - 36, 34 during medals/Blue tee comps and then closer to 36 off the whites..... my only cut last year came when I shot 35 points in the presidents - got me back to 18 from 19....

I suspect your high CSS is due to wind conditions playing havoc and lots of lost balls?

A high CSS or worse SSS is a PITA, means its too easy to hold a handicap that you cant play too or get cut lower than your ability.
We had a similar issue to to large number of Par 3s on the course, SSS was 1 over, thankfully its now back to level par.

The wind doesn't always blow here! This weekend, the weather was fantastic. There was a breeze, nothing dramatic, maybe + 1 club and 1/2 straight into it and the winning score on Sat. was 35 Pts, CSS 74 from 68 entries. Sunday was similar weather, slightly less breeze, winning score 37 Pts, CSS 73 from 84 entries. So, on Saturday, 33 Pts would have yielded in a handicap cut (winner was off 12 so that'll be -0.8 for him).

The rough have been substantially trimmed to thin it out over the last year too. Granted, there are still some places you could lose your golfbag, not to mind ball, but everywhere has places like that.

CSS for the medal was 72 yesterday, last month was 75 which I don't really understand because scores seemed much worse yesterday? (par 69 course)

that is a valid point about interclub comp as we have heard remarks about banditry and handicap minding. I can in all honesty say that the players i know involved most certainly do not go about handicap minding but a CSS of 38 every week makes handicap cuts and significant ones as rare as hens teeth. We are a small club so not overly successful in any of those contests and exceptionally uncompetitve at senior/junior cup/barton.

I think a CSS at par would be fair enough to be honest

We had a two different tee comps yesterday, ran at the same time Blue (very back tees) and Green (society tees)

the CSS off the Blue was 76/ 31 points (SSS is 75) CSS off Green was 71/36 points (SSS is 71)

    par 71

The hole is index 3 for a reason.

This is the way I have been playing it the last few times. 3 iron right over the top or slightly right of the top of the hill and then anything from a 4 iron to a 7 iron to the green.

    Simples.

Ah no really, it is a tough hole and completely divides opinion. 50% of people love it and 50% of people hate it. - I love it :D

7 iron off the tee for me looking for the downslope and a flat lie for another blind shot to the green!!!
