Diesel emissions fail

So my parents 08 Nissan Tilda diesel (1.5) just failed it's NCT with an emissions reading of 2.620 .

So just wondering what might cause such a high reading.

Car was apparently driving fine with no apparent faults/lights.

Part of me thinks that such a high reading for a modern diesel is a lost cause (as in cost lots of €€€s) to fix.

    Edit to add.

Thanks a million for any thoughts

To be fair, modern diesels failing the smoke test is about the only emissions fail I can think of that dipetane and an Italian tune up will actually fix.

    Will certainly look at that.

I felt originally that for how new it is - it was too much of a gap to make up.

    Thanks a million ☺

Ya it’s got to do with the dpf. And people driving diesels that should not be driving them and the whole engine is getting carbed up because there not getting the driving for regens on the dpfs
