    Hi Folks,

Hopefully someone can help me. I haven't researched any of this stuff in years and have been asked to help someone pick a new TV.

My in-laws currently have a TV with built-in Saorview tuner and a UK Freeview set top box. They are looking for a new TV and would like to get rid of the need for a box.

Are such TVs available now and are they common?

Their current TV is a Samsung Smart TV so I'd probably recommend a Samsung if a suitable Samsung was available.

    Any help appreciated.

    Thanks

Will the Saorview tuner in the TV not do Freeview as well as Saorview, making the Freeview box unnecessary?

...... unless of course you mean they have a box for receiving satellite signals (FTA Satellite/Freesat) ......

Some TVs/boxes deliberately ignore stations from the wrong country code. If set to Irl they ignore UK and vice versa.

    Thanks for answering.

Good question, I didn't think they had a dish, but they do. I got some more detail. The new TV is for a second room and they thought they's need another Freesat box for the new room but the sales assistant told them they could buy a TV now with Saorview and UK FTA channels built in.

    My questions now are:
Can they use the existing attic aerial that they use for Saorview to pick up FTA?
Will they miss any/many channels with FTA over FreeSat?

"Freesat" is just a name for the firmware (and company) that provides an EPG on STBs that the company approves. They receive payment from broadcasters to get listed on their EPG.
Not all FTA channels are listed on the Freesat EPG.

The existing Terrestrial aerial 'should' be capable of supplying signal to two TVs for Saorview channels. The installer will know.

They will need a new coax cable from the Satellite dish, to the Satellite tuner in the second TV or in a set top box for that TV, to get the FTA Satellite channels.

Without that second coax from the satellite dish their channels will be severely limited (Saorview only).
