before it goes into a reverse osmosis system. Might as well get any crap out before it enters the RO filters.
Could anyone tell me what type of pre-filter will work that is able to keep it's self from clogging up?
    Thanks.

Filtering the water before it goes into a filter doesn't really make much sense to me!

What do you hope to achieve? The RO filter will happily take care of whatever is coming through the pipe.

There's usually a filter or filters before the RO membranes for that very reason

    - from small throwaway ones to 6ft high yokes filled with sand and gravel layers to massive tanks

You need to be careful if there is a pump involved and you are adding a filter or two afterwards yourself

    The pump may cavitate

Most plumbers merchants will have this filter or one very similar https://www.amazon.co.uk/Aquafilter-Housing-Transparent-Standard-Cartridges/ and you can fit a range of cartridges (which are quite cheap) that go from about 20 micron down to 4 micron.

Don't put a silly small filter size in it as the only block up. My plumbers merchants don't stock the small filter sizes anymore because of customer complaints.
