I was talking to a couple of well seasoned Limousin breeders about this recently. They said it was worst than a herd test as all animals had to be weighed. Huge stress on humans and animals, especially for those with fragmented land.

Yeap agree especially when cows may be heavy in calf.

I honestly think icbf haven't a clue. Most suckler farms are one man bands, labour and time is too short in spring to be weighing calves at birth. As already mentioned, fragmentation is an issue as well, out farms generally don't have a crush, I'd need 4!

I'm reminded of the publicity shot of Bertie tagging a calf, he had someone else holding the calf for him, and he got one tag into it. There was no BVD sample to be taken at the time here. A Fuppin BAx cow knocked me down this spring for the first time when I was tagging calves this year. A bit of a reality check for icbf staff is long overdue.

Ok all the data is great to have and everything, but there is a limit to what a farmer on his own can do. All the data in the laptop might be great while recuperating from cracked ribs or a broken leg, but it isn't much use if you're 6ft under.

If the seat's wet, sit on yer hat, a cool head is better than a wet ar5e.
