What's the deal with birds missing a foot?
Seen several with a stump where a foot should be.

I once seen a pigeon in bus aras with one leg. It looked like he had formed a second leg using a cigarette butt

    There are four main causes.

    Deformity
    Predators
Tangling - In the likes of fishing line, that stops blood flow and causes amputation
Injury by catching the leg in a niche, mouse traps etc.

Would cats and other predators really just bite the foot clean off and the pigeon manages to get away? That seems unlikely, that theyd get away once caught, or that their foot would come clean off without having a lot of injuries to the rest of the body which would kill them. And their feet are so tiny with short legs, a cat would surely lunge at the breast/wing area and not one titchy claw

The Flamingo is just an exhibitionist that likes to show off their balancing skills.

    Sir ,
Normally you're a fine poster but this time you're wrong.

Pigeons lose legs from a fungal infection or a type of mite that causes legs to rot or decay.

Cats in particular will snap at a bird taking flight and many bite a leg, which breaks.

I got a bastard tuxedo Cat and the little $hitbag likes nothing better to stalk out the poor birds. When she manages to capture one of the poor ****ers she wont eat the poor thing, she'll play with it, leave it for a few seconds so she can catch it again, but they mostly get away. But the damage has been done. Damaging their wings or more than likely their poor legs. She doesn't do it as often now, not in front of me anyways, but they are going to do it, just their nature

I was referring to wild birds, not feral pigeons. The OP never mentioned feral pigeons.

funnily enough, I always wondered about this too because you see pigeons with lost feets a lot and I found it always disturbing and the poor birds.

I also thought it must be some kind of illness and not predators causing this. Do you have a back up or link for the fungal infection theory, couldn't find anything on the web...

Not a bird but one of my neighbours owns this small happy scraggy looking dog and he got out a few weeks ago.

He is missing one of his back legs but he was legging it around like there was no tomorrow. I didnt even notice until he went to mark his territory against a tree. I was surprised that he still lifts the one back leg he has left to do it!! I thought fair play to him. :)

The green netting that comes on the fat balls, you should take it off and wherever you feed them - don't stick to the one spot cuz the turds build up, move feeders around or if over stones hose the place down sometimes.

Landmines! More specially the German Schu-mine 42 (Shoe-mine), also known as the Schützenmine 42.
