    Alright lads,

Very quick one. Moving over to Ireland from Scotland soon, cat 1 golfer, play loads of opens, mostly on links courses. Are ‘Senior’ scratch cups for over 18s or am I misunderstanding? I usually associate ‘senior’ golf with over 50s, ‘mens’ for 18-50 and juniors obviously under 18s. Am I right in thinking that ‘stablefords’ are the main club golf competition format throughout a season and ‘strokeplay’ - i.e. finish every hole, can’t have a blob - is less prevalent? I know every round is technically a stableford, but just trying to find out a bit more about Irish club golf! Cheers!

senior and junior, minor etc are all categories of handicap
unfortunately, every club seems to differ in their handicap brackets. it really should be a standard set by gui.

otherwise you more or less have it

Senior scratch cups are for low handicappers. Usually 5 and lower. And then you've Senior's golf which is for over 55s afaik. :)

Stableford is usually the main competition in clubs, but there are always variations in any given month. You'd have the monthly 'medal' which is strokeplay and often a V-Par as well.

Senior scratch cups are usually from handicaps up to maybe 6
Then you've got Intermediate above that maybe up to 11
    Then Junior up to 18
    Then Minor 19+

Stableford by far the most common type of comp.

Medal competitions (club majors) are usually stroke, maybe once a month from April - October

Some clubs do the odd V-Par tourney

Senior/junior/intermediate/minor are to do with handicap classes. Senior are typically less than 5, junior 5 to 9 etc - there may be some variation between clubs.

Stableford is popular but a lot of clubs run monthly strokes competitions - with sometimes the odd extra one thrown in.

Having played golf in the US, UK and here I'd say opens are more prevalent here, and there's a greater variety of comps played - for example never really played a V-par comp anywhere except Ireland. Also I think there's greater variety of two and fourball comps with better ball, foursome, 2/4 person teams, rumbles, scrambles and waltzes being popular. In the UK I found it was mostly FBBB.

That's it pretty much covered, I was just add that if you're looking at booking into Opens, a "Senior Open" will be age related...i.e over 55 or such. It probably changes from Club to Club.

Wouldn't junior be from 6-11 and intermediate 11-18?

The change in handicap ranges for club comps have changed this a bit this year.

Senior is usually up to about 4
    Junior is usually 4-10
    Intermediate 11-17
    Minor 18+

Cool - I thought it was at the discretion of the clubs themselves

It is. You will find generally those are representative groups, but every club is different.
