Painting a steel girder

Guys just made up a log splitter and thinking of painting it. Galvanising it is not practical. Now with other machinery here, I'd just rub burnt oil to any rusty metal. Messy but it stops things rusting.
Can anyone recommend a good method of painting. Would cleaning, degreasing, priming and then second coat be the way to go?
What brand of paint would ye recommend?

I'd probably power wash it and give it a couple of coats of red oxide paint myself.

    My 2c

Lowe rust primer, ideally via spray for an even cover. Two coats if you really want to preserve it, followed by your favourite oxide paint
Clean as usual and degrease with cellulose thinners - don't believe the spiel on the can that you can paint it on over rust or water

Mind you, good paint has gone so.dear that it makes hot dipped look like value
