Why am I not able to opt out of seeing this ad like I can do with other ads?

    Hi Odelay,
You can usually opt out of seeing Google Ads, however these are not Google ads. They are capped so that you will only see them a certain number of times per day rather than seeing them all the time.

This is making a joke of Distillers media which Boards belongs to and includes the Journal.ie which pretended to be a fact checker on TV3 when it is getting paid money by the Yes campaign to advertise.

This is incorrect, Boards has not been a part of Distilled Media (which is now called Distilled SCH) since 2015 and TheJournal.ie has always been a separate entity to Distilled Media/Distilled SCH.

But is Boards majority owned by Distilled Media LTd whatever they call themselves now and operated as Boards.ie Limited?
This is what I come across. Maybe update your wiki presence if this is not true as it points to a conflict of interests.

Thanks for the suggestion Robert, we'll look into doing that.

Niamh. The last time I checked Boards was controlled (90%+) by Distilled Media Ltd, an Irish company. Distilled SCH is a joint venture, also partially owned by Distilled Media Ltd, and runs Adverts.ie, Donedeal and Daft. I think thejournal.ie is also owned by Distilled Media Ltd, making Boards and the Journal
    associated companies under common control

I don't think ads related to the referendum should be on the site.

    why not?
i don't think there should be advertising allowed at all for any referenda but why specifically should they not be allowed on boards?

I didn't mean no ads on boards exclusively relating to this referendum. Like you, I wouldn't allow any referenda ads anywhere. It's seem wrong to me to commercialise issues in this way.

If ads shouldn't be allowed anywhere how do you propose people obtain info on a ref?

After all, they won't see adverts online, TV, radio, print media or even leaflet drops (these are all adverts after all)

So you want it just down to refcom?
or are their adverts not allowed also?

Subscribe, and you can turn them off, as you're supporting the site that way. Otherwise, the ads run, to enable boards to feed the hamsters that run the boards servers.
