Witness summons

I've just had a garda round with a witness summons. My statement was pretty basic, I didn't even realise what the crime was until I read it in the paper a few days later, I thought something was thrown when it wasn't that at all.

I understand the role witnesses have, I know how much a witness can help. But right now my mental health is in a state of decline (I have bipolar) and I'm going through some one to one counselling with a charity for a past abusive relationship, so I'm really honestly not in a very good place.

What can I do? I am extremely worried that if my statement is accepted for court the whole thing will further reduce my mental health, and cause problems in my day to day life (single parent, am really only just holding on). I also still live in the area, and it's not the sort of area you want to be seen as a friend to the cops, and I have the added stress of that weighing on me

Thanks for any advice. Sorry for any over sharing, I'm just a bit panicked.

If you got summoned unfortunately you have to go to court.

There is a chance you might not even have to give evidence on the day. It can often happen that you hang about the court building and then hear that you are not required.

I totally understand your mental health issues. Try to realise that you are not on trial and your evidence is probably only a small part in the process. To be honest all of the parties involved will not be hugely interested in you and you will probably be able to slip in and slip out with no repercussions.

Failing to turn up can have repercussions for you so its best to bite the bullet and get on with it.

The very best of luck and remember that you are only a small cog in the process and you are not on trial.
