Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Hi guys. Question about brake discs on my 2013 bmw 520d F10.

It got new pads and discs at 106k kms. It flashed up that I’d needed new pads last week at 160k Kms.

Dropped it into Bmw and they said it needed discs as well. The discs are at 21.9 and min is 22.4mm new they are 24mm.

This seems weird as that would mean that the discs wore out 25% quicker than than the pads. On my A6 and e240 I always got 2 sets of pads to 1 set of discs.

Is it just me or is there something wrong with this?

Just to let u know I work for a bm specialist and the f10s eat through discs where constantly changing them. And my advice to you is to buy genuine ones and we have tried both and there is no comparison at all. U get no time at all on the after market ones.

Thanks for that. Just compared to other cars they didn’t seem to last. At this rate I’ll be changing discs more than pads

What type of roads do you drive?

I have done 100k on my disks and no hint of a lip on them

Well I can tell you that is very strange because they lip quite easy and do warp quite easily also. This is quite common on the f10s but if u can buy one then you can put the parts on it I guess. But ya maybe 3 sets of pads max and change the discs. Seeing it most dates at this stage

Would expect that the dealer is been a little over cautious on the discs , 2 sets of pads through a set set of discs would be pretty standard on them but not 1 set unless you live in a seaside area with very high levels of corrosion or some other extreme use

Essentially it is one set of pads and they said the discs are already .5mm below minimum. Approx 60k km since discs and pads were changed together.

Mainly travel m50 Wicklow to blanch. Starting at 7 finish at 3 so not too much traffic

From what I understand discs have 1.6mm of wear from new to min. In 60k mine have worn 2.1mm. So in fact discs only lasted approx 45k Kms which seems crazy

Not strange for me - I get 200k out of pads. 95% motorway driving and good anticipation.

No matter how hard on the brakes I am I still would expect the pads to wear out first

Its normal on BMW's to be honest, they are very hard on discs. Get them replaced with Genuine discs and pads but it is one of the costs of ownership unfortunately.

Sounds that way anyway. Cheers. Always use genuine discs and pads.

While we're on tbe topic of f10 discs.
    My f10 has 18" wheels,
How much extra effort/parts would be required to upgrade the discs to 530d discs, when it next comes time for disc replacement.

You would need the calipers and carriers too not just the discs

That's not a problem.. could I be a pain, and ask for a list of stuff that I would need via realoem.com

It's something that I will be doing.

The discs on my 530d look to be the same size as the discs on my old 520d.

530d same size as 520d. 535d/535i have the bigger discs.

I've read previously that BMW dealers will do discs with all pad changes on all models above 3 series.
I'm not going to claim any knowledge of BMW brakes however dealers in general do tend to run with very conservative wear limits.

The 525d/530d have bigger and thicker brake discs than the 520d

    525d/530d - 348mm Diameter and 30mm Thickness

    520d - 330mm Diameter and 24mm Thickness

I've a 525d and found this out much to my annoyance.

    Why the annoyance ?
Surely the upgraded brakes give better performance ?

It's something I want to do.

Btw, what size wheels do you have?

There is a steep parts price increase when you go beyond the 520d size, especially to the 535 size

Sorry, I wasn't clear - I bought the parts for a 520d thinking they were the same.

    I've 19" Wheels.

I don't think you'll notice any difference going from the 520d brakes to the 530d brakes on your 520d tbh. It be a waste of money IMO.
