Yesterday while waiting for the other half I saw a Robin on a nearby tree, I got out of the car and started to call it with my hand open, he or she flew to a tree closer to me and after a few minutes flew to me within a foot or so and started to hover like a humming bird for at least 10 seconds, I never knew that a Robing could do this, he was perfectly level to me and stopped, it was a wonderful thing to see just wished he had had landed on my hand.

The are curious and opportunistic birds and do this regularly enough.

I have a nesting pair in a birdbox in the back garden with 4 eggs. They would regularly land beside me while I'm gardening etc. Lovely to see them coming and going all day :)

Whats the best box to attract them?

Robins apparently like open fronted next boxes, i.e. not your typical nest box with a small hole in the front. We have one very similar to this one ...

except ours has no back to it for some bizarre reason and relies on whatever you're mounting it on to provide the back surface. It's positioned on a back wall about 2m above the ground amongst some ivy as recommended so would have expected some nesting action but after many years have not seen anything at all, despite having robins in the garden regularly.

I bought my one in Lidl :D
It's one of the ones that looks like a miniture house with just a small hole in the front. One thing I was told though is not to have them south facing as it gets too warm.

That's more a Tit box. Robins prefer the open fronted type box. Position boxes North or North East facing and about two metres high for tit boxes. With robins the box should be nearer the ground and concealed by vegetation.

Yea but these are Kilkenny Robins. They probably wouldn't be as fussy as as the robins in your neck of the woods. They seem happy enough to me anyway :)
