    Hi all,

    Currently driving an E320cdi (2003) and looking to switch to a more upright driving position to help with some recent back pain.

    I've been looking at BMW X5s and Range rovers. I'm leaning towards the RR since I've had BMW's previously, and I'm not excited about them.

    I know about the MPG costs and servicing costs associated with a RR, but are they very troublesome in general?

    I do a lot of work myself on cars, but I've heard the RR can have a lot of electrical issues (i.e. problems I probably can't fix myself).

    Any advice/opinions would be helpful.

    I have a late 2005 effectively launch model L322 V8 supercharged. From what I have read (and experienced) it had a quite complex/advanced electrics. Lots of sensors which over time can fail or give false positives. These can range from my dance (sensor indicates bulb failure but bulb is fine but sensor failed) to significant (car going into limp mode to protect gearbox but it’s actually ecetrics/sensor rather than transmission fault). Some of these may have been due to failing battery etc.

    Overall I love mine despite the poor fuel economy, high motor tax etc. For the first 5 years of ownership (car aged 5-10), I had limited expenditure outside usual servicing. Over the past 2 years (since returning to Dublin, coincidentally), I’ve had a failed alternator, gearbox rebuild and from suspension replacement (following leak in suspension airbags). These were each quite expensive. If you fon’t Have cash to deal with large expenses then I would probably avoid a Range River if this vintage. Ultimately nothing is particularly cheap to fix. Nothing may go wrong and at that age, you might be faced with a number of fix/write off decisions. Access to a reliable specialist Indy is probably invaluable.

    I'm driving an X5 and it's fine but beauty etc. is in the eye of the beholder

    I think the RRs look nicer etc. and would love a RR but a friend in the UK is a RR mechanic and has warned me off on numerous occasions. The last posters point about the gearbox is one of the things he mentioned (as well as electrics, air suspension as well) .


    Generally I've been told buy a new one or two year old one and get rid before 75-85k or else avoid.
