OP, I don't think you will have much choice in the way of 2009 onwards petrol cars with low tax for 4.5k including tax.

Those two I've linked are within range, but I haven't found a lot tbh. Was hoping for some inspiration ;)
I'd happily pay the tax for 18 months or so & sell the car on then.

Anything to look out for on either the Volvo or the Lancer?

Those flexifuel Volvos are fond of petrol and need to be serviced every 10k km afaik. Volvo parts are not cheap either. I'd also be wary of the Lancer as they tend to be driven by young lads who rag the nuts out of them.

You might find a Honda Civic 1.8 saloon within budget.

I don't think that generation of Lancer fell foul of the young pretenders in fairness. I'd certainly consider them.

What about a Suzuki Swift OP or do you want something bigger?

Have a look at the one the OP linked. ;)

I was looking for something bigger tbh. Dropping a year could get me a beemer & the tax on those €390 for some reason.

I didn't know they needed to be serviced so regularly, that rules them out so.

Having put my car up for sale, due to the fact I no longer need a diesel, I'm currently looking for a petrol car from circa 2009 onwards, hatch or saloon type.

Budget is 4.5k - including any tax to be paid etc. Any suggestions for something a bit left field. I've seen a few Volvo's & a Mitsubishi lancer around the 4k mark, but the tax on these is €750 per year. Not totally off put by this, but not ideal at the same time. I've included two links...

    Any help greatly appreciated.
They do a 1.5 Lancer too, which is way more common than the 1.8

In my defence I've not slept all week after the arrival of our first baby.

OP a 1.5l standard Lancer would be fine, petrol Auris or go a little older and get a Saab 93/95 or anything else.

You could have this and a years tax in budget. Nice to see one that isn't silver! Reasonable spec too.

Or a Merc. With a bit of haggling you'd have the price of a years tax on this too.

Only a weedy 1.6 but very nice spec. Cheap tax too

I had a look at a few lancers & they're asking €5k for a 2008 decent spec. Are all those petrol Volvos felxifuel ?

Don't know about the volvo but You'll get a lancer for a lot cheaper than 5k. 2008 examples are going for as low as 2k these days while decent examples can be got for under 4k.

If it was me though and I was spending 5k id get a civic. They are much nicer in everyway compared to a lancer and if you go for the 2008 onwards 5 door they have the same tax as a 1.5 lancer despite being 1.8

The interior is miles better on them and they are a lot more practical too.

They are a lovely car, so much so I've had one already & would like something different again.

I was also looking at the 318i. Are the servicing costs astronomical with BMW'S?

Don't know anything about the bmw but a lancer will feel like a step down if you've already had a civic.
