Wasnt sure where to put this one..

The Dail has now passed a new digital age of consent bill which sets the age of consent to 16.

How is Boards going to handle this ?
What will happen those under 16 and above 13 who were legal when signing up but who will now be illegally on boards.ie in the near future?

Is it not the case with most laws that they would be grandfathered in?

May have to close the junior cert forum as being pointless now however though.

Seems it can be allowed with parental consent but how can that be managed online!

As it stands, the Terms of Use say that "If you are aged 13 years or over but under the age of 18 you must obtain the consent of a parent or legal guardian before registering as a user of boards.ie," so this shouldn't have any great impact when it comes into effect. We will be looking into proposed variances in detail when more information becomes available just in case there's anything that we may need to consider.

How do you obtain parental consent?

It's as clear as mud whether the social media (etc) companies will just merrily continue saying "click this box if you're of the correct age (or have parental consent)". Or as Prof Cyberpanic was just implying on the radio, they'll be terrified by the prospect of mahoosive fines into demanding notarised copies of passports and birth certs to make sure they know for certain what everyone's exact age is.

You'd almost think it might have been a good idea to work this stuff out before staging a populist ambush of legislation in committee stage...
