ESB is currently replacing the old chademo fast charger at Topas Galway with a new one which has 3 charger leads.

Can several cars charge at the same time from the new one?

I don't think so. The three cables are there to give a wider range of charge types. IE. Ionic can charge there now.

Often FAST AC and either Chademo or CCS can be used together but not chademo and CCs at the same time.

You mean Ioniq can compete for a charge there now!

Are you talking about the one on the Newcastle road?

    yes

They are in the process of upgrading quite a few of them, which is good news for CCS users.

However I'd love to know what they're doing with the old ones. Surely they should install the new chargers alongside the old ones to avoid the ongoing single point of failure issues.

Either that or install the old ones somewhere else there is a need?

Maybe the export them to Japan?

Considering who is running the network, and the complete mess they made of it since 2015, I wouldnt be surprised if they were binning the old ones.

The unit they replaced in Ennis is destined for Killkenny according to someone on fb who was speaking to one of the installers. Not sure about the others - they would make handy SCPs for 40kWh Leaf's :p

Also Commons Road in Cork was replaced last week. We finally have another CCS FCP in Cork!

I presume the reason we're seeing replacement rather the expansion is due to costs.
I've seen reference to the EFACEC's being €32,000, they'd require grid work to add the charger alongside the existing one.
Fastned over specced their grid connections for expansions, eCars probably minimum specced theirs.

Can't they just be stored with the e-voting machines?

I wish they could, but they need to give the instruction to sell the network first....

.... oh wait, you mean the old machines?

I can confirm this. After seeing on the Ecars FB page that the unit in Knocktopher (just off the M9 between Kilkenny and Waterford) was down for maintenance last week, I went by that way on the way home, and saw that the unit had indeed been replaced.

My experience wasn't great. First it was double-ICEd, but that cleared quickly. Next it was clear that the only fast DC option was Chademo, and then when I tried seeing if Fast AC would work for me, that didn't either - I got some sort of initialisation error. I should mention that I've never tried Fast AC anywhere on the Ioniq, but I had assumed it would work, albeit limited to 7 kW.

Anyway the display said something like "FILLING STATION ENNIS", so yes, it seems as if KK got that unit. I see on the FB page that they're doing the Four Lakes retail park charger in Carlow today. I hope to God that it's going to become a triple-header, because there is no CCS coverage between Naas and Waterford, which is p155 poor.

Latest updates from the ESB E-Cars Facebook page:

The installation of the new fast multi-standard charger at Sexton Street, Limerick, is now complete and is available for use.

Dear EV drivers the installation of the new fast multi-standard charger at Circle K/Topaz Service Station on the Airport Road, Shannon, Co Clare is now complete and is available for use. We thank you for your patience.

Happy as I am for the mid-west, I'd really like to see updates in the south-east, particularly CCS along the M9 corridor and the Rosslare area.

I read somewhere that the ESB will not be installing any new fast chargers until the middle of next year

There's one very near it at Ballinasloe.

The busiest fast charge point in Ireland (Lucan) was out for the guts of 3 months, but apparently it's back in action. Haven't tried it. In fact I haven't had a fast charge in about 5 months. The last time I tried a fast charge there was a dick charging his L40 for 2-2.5 hours while he was away. Thankfully I did not rely on a charge

I would be very, very reluctant to go on a drive now where I would need a fast charge. Hopefully Ionity will kick in soon, but the situation for CHAdeMO cars (Leafs) is dire.

And to think BMW removed the Rex option for Europe ? idiots !

Don't think I will part with mine in a hurry , could also see 2nd hand values increase especially considering the disastrous charging situation in Ireland.

Yes, In general ESB only planned for 100kW per site, which with overheads and possible AC43 use means only 1 rapid per site. FastNed installed 800kW per site and located their sites next to the medium voltage network for easy expansion beyond that.

For CCS it was hitting 40kW and then tripping. I arrived in lucan sub-6% SoC a month or two ago.. just needin enough to get home and was able to get 5-6kWh across a few sessions to get me home.
