I,'m looking for the board wisdom / advice on what might be a suitable next car. Currently drive approx 350km to and from work each week through Dublin. And at least once a month down to Clare. I have a 08 diesel 1.4 Auris which has been great but its time for a change. I am thinking that its worth going for a larger second hand Diesel with a bigger engine this time with some bells and whistles. As I would like some luxury i'm willing to spend around 24K. I was looking at 161 Audi A4's but not sure you can get a decent one at my price range or how economical they are.
What would others here look at?

Economical, yes they are. Probably slightly thirstier than your Auris but not by a huge amount.
Get an auto if you are in stop start driving through Dublin, much more comfort in traffic.
I'd be looking at an A6.

Do you really want diesel or are you open to something else? I'd be looking at an IS300h with that kind of money, or maybe a Jaguar XF if it had to be diesel (mind you, I have no first hand experience with Jags diesels).

Thanks for the ideas, I actually never considered the A6 or the Jag.I think diesel would still be appropreate given the distance i travel. Would the IS300h cost a fortune on a long drive as you are towing a 2.5 L engine and a battery pack as well?

If most of your daily drive is through Dublin then an A6 or XF might be a bit cumbersome. They would definitely be more comfortable and refined over an A4 but narrow streets or parking could become a problem.

No it wouldn't, you should see 6.0l/100km or thereabout. In the city, it would consume much less than conventional engines in the same environment. I think, given the nature of your commute, that this would be a very good car, you have the comfort of a Lexus for the motorway bit and the efficiency of hybrid in dublin... plus it's as reliable as any Lexus, shouldn't be a pain to insure, is nice to drive... just me though, go try one and see for yourself if it would suit ;)

If driving in Dublin then you should not be using a diesel.

With 24k you should look at hybrid or electric..

    Full electric options are:
eGolf, exact same as Golf but with full electric engine. I done 15k km's last year in mine and it cost €197. I dont use public charger.....would be open to sell mine as lookign to upgrade:P
    Ioniq as posted above
Leaf....I dont like them....its down to personal taste
BMW i3, potential a REX which has back up petrol engine in it if you run low on battery....https://www.carzone.ie/used-cars/bmw/i3/used-2016-161-bmw-i3-i3-range-extende-dublin-fpa-38672212631844

    Hybrid
Outlander, Plug in so it will be 50km on battery before petrol kicks in, based on your mileage most of your journeys will be on battery. It is a jeep but you would pick up a GX4H for 22k. Full leather, sun roof, etc
    Prius...meh
Kia Niro hybrid, jeep, nice https://www.carzone.ie/used-cars/kia/niro/used-2017-171-kia-niro-hybrid-exl-aut-dublin-fpa-103611354232135
Ioniq hybrid is also available https://www.carzone.ie/used-cars/hyundai/ioniq/used-2017-171-hyundai-ioniq-ioniq-hev-kilkenny-fpa-5247258412083409692
Lots of lexus and toyota hybrids as well.....

Not many of these on road, beautiful car: https://www.carzone.ie/used-cars/audi/a3/used-2015-151-audi-a3-1-4-tfsi-e-tron-dublin-fpa-367192558083580

Electric service costs are tiny as nothing to repair, unless brake pads or wipers need replacing. Rest of it is software updates. Tax is low and insurance is lower

Hybrid has a lower tax bracket
