I was talking to someone who has a two bed apt in UK and is struggling hand to mouth with rent

If you sublet in UK and give just a rent receivedreceipt is the other person just a licence or does that person ha e equal rights to you as a tenant ?

The previous person moved in his GF soon after moving in and she is concerned of a cuckoo situation in the future. That person moved on but she is insecure about sharing now as a result ...

    https://www.citizensadvice.org.uk/housing/renting-a-home/subletting-and-lodging/

That page has all the info. Your friend could have a 'lodger' instead of subletting. There seems to be very little real difference between the two except sub-tenants have more rights. They might have greater difficulty in finding someone who is willing to accept a 'lodging' arrangement rather than a sub-tenancy, but certainly it seems classing the other person as a lodger would be more beneficial to your friend.
