Single Person Child carer credit wrong????

    Hi guys,

Going to try make this short and simple to read

myself and my ex had a child in october (we were not together when the baby was born, we are respectable towards each other and I see my child 4 days a week)

She works but not enough to pay tax ( earns only 200euro a week part time and claims the rest) basically she doesnt pay full tax

Where as I do, so I claimed on revenue online that I was a single person child carer for 2018, I met the criteria and claimed the credits.
    Got a rebate, happy days.

Got a ring off revenue that I am suppose to fill in forms to claim this, and my ex is suppose to fill in another form saying she agrees that I can claim them.

So we filled in the forms and sent them back in.

Now heres the problem, Basically I already got a rebate for 2018, but I also wrote on the form (so did my ex) that I want to claim a rebate as far back as october from the date my son was born.
    So i was expecting a rebate from october-december 2017,

    Still with me?
    Good

revenue just left me a message in my account online, saying I am going to receive a cheque for 1560 euro ( I ow them about 80e of tax from last year because the rebate)

I think they messed up or have they?
I dont want to claim for the whole of 2017 because my son was not born until october, im only looking for a rebate from oct-dec. But it seems who ever has done my paperwork has giving me the full claim in credits for the whole of 2017.
I also very clearly stated on the paperwork that my son was born in october-2017 and I want to claim from oct-dec 2017

I am assuming this is an error on his part. or is that how is it? you claim for the year or not at all? (which I would find very strange)

Obviously I don't plan on spending any of this money until its sorted.
    Can anyone clarify?

While were at it, anyone any idea who I ring to sort this? assuming its wrong, im in the d12 area so not sure which place to ring.

I don't think tax credits are ever allocated on a pro-rata basis, you either get them in full or not at all

I find it strange though cause my son was born in October. How can I be entitled to the full amount if most of the year has passed. Thanks for the fast reply btw. I hate dealing with taxes

Not sure why you find it strange tbh. Tax credits are not allocated on a pro-rata basis, it's always been that way. It doesn't matter what date in 2017 your child was born, you're either entitled to the credit or not. Simple as. You're over-complicating things.

    I understand what you mean.
But I just thought that claiming a full amount was weird.

I mean I'm getting money from Jan 17 for scc when I didn't even know she was pregnant. Il ring tomorrow to double check.
    Cheers mate.

I just don't want the tax man to turn around next year and say i ow them 1200 euro. I'm a payee so I don't deal with my own taxes I leave it to my employer

It's definitely correct. Only a few credits and reliefs are apportioned pro rata. Even if your child was born on 31/12/2017, you would be entitled to claim the entire credit for that year, because that's the year you became a single parent. Personally I think it's crazy, but you're entitled to it. Also congrats! :)
