    Hi,

Just wondering in the case of a naturalised citizen applying for an Irish passport, can they submit an original, but expired, passport from their country of origin, or they need to submit the current one as part of the application for an Irish passport?

I can't seem to find any official links to answer this question, any help will be appreciated. I'm asking this as I know it takes a long time to apply as a first timer, so would like to keep the current one with me in case of emergency travels.

    thanks.

You normally need to submit your current Irish passport. If this is a problem, e.g. you are planning on travelling soon, talk to them first. I don't think they are overly interested in foreign passports at renewal time.

You could email or phone them and/or go to one of the passport offices. https://www.dfa.ie/passports-citizenship/contact-us/

    Thanks Victor.
But my question is very different. For example, a Canadian having their expired and current Canadian passports at hand.
Now this Canadian is naturalised, and is applying for an Irish passport for the first time. They never have an Irish passport before.
The question is, whether this person can just include the expired Canadian passport or must include the currently valid Canadian passport to apply for the Irish one.
I tried filling out the email section on DFA site but heard nothing back.

Apologies, I though this was a second Irish passport. As Fred says, they will want current, not previous passport / other documents. You should get them back. As mentioned, if this is a problem, talk to them first.

I am interested in the same question, as i am in the same position ( British)

I am led to believe if you make an appointment at the passport office in Dublin or Cork, and take all your documents with you, you may be able to walk out with your current Canadian passport, after submitting your application. I cannot be 100% but that is what i am led to believe.
