Bird sound ID

I have a small urban garden with large beech trees in the field behind. Over the last few weeks I am hearing an usual bird sound which I never heard before. It’s hard to describe but it’s like a double squeak. It’s always in two with no pause in between. I know my description is crap but any ideas?

No definitely not the cuckoo. It’s more like squeak “ahh-ahh”...

Same note, very loud and distinct, can be heard from a distance. It’s wrecking my head the past few weeks, I have listened to a good few clips of birds calls but nothing close. It has to be a bird!

No not a tit, I would say it’s coming from a bigger bird as the sound is grainier rather than chirpy.

It’s not unlike the woodpecker sound but it’s only ever 2 sqwuaks both lasting a second in total (agh-agh), then nothing for 5-10 minutes.

It might be a grey squirrel. There’s plenty of them in the beech trees.

It sounds similar but the call I’m hearing is consistently the same pattern.

Mystery solved, it’s definitely a jay, thanks for putting me out of my misery! Are they common?

Common but shy and usually only given away by their call. Frequent mature deciduous woods with a preference for Oak.....
