Myself and the Parents are thinking getting a car which I'd use whenever I'm back home and we've spotted this volvo:

    https://www.donedeal.ie/cars-for-sale/07-volvo-s80-diesel-new-nct-automatic/18775574

Nct is legit and no change of ownership within the last 3 months but just wondering is it too cheap?
Only 1 interior pic so hard to grasp what the interior condition is but from the outside it looks good.
Are the d4s a good engine in auto form? Also can anyone tell are those xenons at the front? Phone isn't clear.

No it's not too cheap, I'd pay that for it though if I liked it and all checked out. Pre 08 high tax stuff is not in demand at all.

Tax doesn't matter to us as it would be used also by them a lot.
    Are those the 185bhp engine?

Anyone else got some pointers or opinions?

Just be aware that the S80 seller is selling other cars so some sort of part time dealer.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,875 ✭✭✭✭bear1

Yeah 3 others which I knew as well so eyes a bit more open.
Seems the gearbox can be a bit hit or miss but again not exactly something that's very common.
Asked the seller for more info so just waiting for a response.

That's a lot of car for the money!

It's the 5 cylinder 2.4d engine, which is a great engine - plenty of torque in any form of tune. Cartell is saying it's a D5 SE, so that's at least 185ps - can't remember when they went to the Twin Turbo 205ps in the D5.

Didn't supply enough Auto's to know whether it was a good gearbox or not, as it was a damn expensive car. Auto's aren't known to give issues in the Volvo's and the D5 engine is good for 300k + if looked after. Not the best autobox, but not the worst either.

Of all the cars ive had, the S80 was my favourite. You'll do well to find a more comfortable machine. Mine was manual and the older 2005 D5 so was actually frugal on diesel compared to any other VAG diesel I had.
The only downside for me is the cost of parts. Even the most mundane, simple part proved expensive. Just keep that in mind.
Otherwise, savage machine. I sold my 05 recently for a few hundred less that the asking of the car in your link.
Low mileage, might be coming up to expensive scheduled maintenance?

Yeah it's a good one from the looks of it.
Really struggling to get a quote on it though

The age is prob coming against it in terms of getting a quote

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,875 ✭✭✭✭bear1

I think that as well but it's 11 years old so I mean they shouldn't be too difficult in pulling a bloody quote.

Seller got back in touch and will send on more pictures and the good news also is that the timing belt was recently done but I'm awaiting confirmation at what mileage it was done.

While waiting for that info 2 more showed up on my list.

https://www.donedeal.ie/cars-for-sale/volvo-s80-se-d5-auto-beauty-only-120k/17927224 -> are these also 185 or the lesser 165 version?
Seems nice but just don't like the front of it.

Or this which looks just fantastic and the interior is beyond bonkers which I love

On the estate yeah? I thought they looked like they were a sort of gun metal sprayed colour.

I have an S60 of a similar vintage and it has been a bit of a money pit. Parts are quite expensive, it doesn't like sitting up for too long and it hasn't been the most reliable overall. The autobox is a sealed for life unit but the oil needs changing at the 100k mark and is hugely expensive to change as well as having quite a high chance of shítting itself when the oil is changed. It is also a pig on diesel around town. A fine and extremely comfy car but I wouldn't get another.

S60 with a D5 geartronic so a lot of shared parts. The D5 is a seriously heavy engine that eats engine mounts and front suspension parts. The gearbox is pretty crap too. I can't drive it hard as the transmission flares and bangs violently into gear. Changing isn't an option for me unless I HAVE to at the moment so I nurse it and feather foot away. Even then I am barely averaging the low forties MPG wise driving mainly on N roads at 80 - 100 KMPH.

From memory, it was late 2006 when the D5 went from 163 to 185. Not much difference in torque between them, still a huge amount, so doubt you'd notice much difference.
