Cutting back NZ flax

After the bad winter my NZ flax plants are looking quite bedraggled. Can I cut them right back to the ground?

I cut them back to approx 1’, and discovered a hellebore i’d Totally forgotten was there! There were some new blades coming in so it should be good. If nothing else, it’ll give the rest of the plants some air.
