When I was 18 I was in a car crash with my friend who died 3 days later, because of this and other personal tragedies I developed severe PTSD which went undiagnosed for 10+ years in which time I self medicated with drugs. The problem is my psychiatrists won't prescribe me effective medicines because of my previous drug use even though i've been clean for years. I can't sleep because nightmares terrify me so much I wake up to 10 times per night. I've tried explaining but they don't listen. The result is self isolation. I'm 31 now and don't don't smoke, drink or take drugs but they still won't treat me with anti anxiety meds. Any advice? DISCLAIMER: I'm not looking for medical advice mods.

I presume it's something like diazepam or sleeping tablets you're looking for (should be used short-term only) as antidepressants which also treat PTSD shouldn't be a problem.

Have you or your doctors considered CBT? It's as good for PTSD as medication. You could look for it privately if it doesn't seem to be an option.

Thats a lot to have gone through but well done for conquering the drugs etc. It cant have been an easy journey.
Instead of focusing on tablets to help you deal with ptsd, have you spoken with a professional about what you've experienced?

Has PTSD actually been diagnosed by a psychiatrist?

Yeah, PTSD and Acute anxiety disorder. I've been hospilised once because I felt like I was going crazy with unrelenting feelings of terror. It's such a primal feeling of fear that I spend most time in my room. The problem is because of my past drug use the GP and Psychiatrist are very reluctant to treat me with effective medicines. The dangers of me goin' untreated is far worse than the danger of potential addiction to prescribed medicines tbh. I'll ask them about CBT. If I simply wanted diazapam or something I could get it in 5 minutes flat on the street, I want to get better by any means not get high.

Really an Ssri and targeted CBT is what you need. Neither of which are addictive. If you have clean urine samples I would think accessing treatment wouldn't be an issue.good luck.
